KENYA CINEMA

Feature filming in Kenya started in the late 90s hence it has risen till date despite the outbreak of Covid-19. From the Battle of the Sacred Tree (1995) by Wanjiku Kinyanjui, Saikati (1992) by Anne Mungai and The Baisikol (1997)by Ingolo wa Keya to Togetherness Supreme (2010) by Nathan Collet, Mizizi (2015) and Sincerely Daisy (2020) by Nick Mutuma.

You can watch Kenyan some of these movies on Netflix, Showmax, One Fine Day Films or YouTube. The websites rather discourage Swahili moves due to poor ability to translate the Swahili language to English.

Malooned (2007) directed by Bob Nyanja

During an Easter weekend a Luther and Di get stuck in a toilet of a skyscraper in Nairobi. The situation is more complicated for Di since she has to walk down the isle on Easter Monday. They have no choice but to work together find their way out despite their differences.

Rafiki (2018) directed by Wanuri Kahiu

Tell the story of a lesbian couple, Kena and Ziki, whose paths cross when their fathers run against each other for a seat in the County. The two find themselves attracted to each other but the always eyeing society is ready to keep them apart.

Just In Time (2021) directed by Lowladee Omolola Adeleke

When a bookstore clerk's dreams are shuttered she finds herself taking care of her estranged cousin's daughter due to a family dispute. The two weeks they spend together totally changes their lives. You can find the movie on Netflix.

Nairobi Half Life (2012) directed by David Gitonga

Mwas travels from his rural home to Nairobi and to his dismay, embraced by thugs who rob him of his possessions on the first day. He takes us through his life of thievery and acting as he tries to balance both worlds.

Supa Modo (2018) directed by Likarion Wainaina

A young girl's dream of being a super hero is cut short when she discovers she has a terminal illness. The whole village however come up with a plan to innovate her into achieving her goals.

The Captain of Nakara (2012) directed by Bob Nyanja

An ex convict in a fictional country of Nakara is set free. He falls in love with a pastor's daughter but due to his disgusted past, pretends to own a small profitable business. However his plans "flop" due to raise in corruption in the area.

Taboo (2017) directed by Shane Cogan

This is a short film about an African woman who struggles with mental illness. She appears confident and fine  before the world but she fights her own battles whenever she is alone.

Subira (2018) directed by Ravneet Sippy Chadha

Based in Lamu, Subira is a story of a girl who is forbidden from swimming after her father dies. She also can't pursue her dreams due to an arranged marriage.

Uradi (2020) Kang'ehe Mungai

 This is a film based on a true story about a young man who is lured into crime and radicalization when he can't seem to cope with life in a Nairobi campus. 

40 Sticks (2020) directed by Victor Gatonye

A group of a death row prisoners are attacked during a transfer through a forest. They are threatened by a spiteful prison warden, wild animals, and a mysterious killer who looms around killing them one by one.
